Positive Transitions to Work
what we do
We provide support services to students, families and schools across Long Island, including Nassau County, Suffolk County, Brooklyn and Queens. We also provide training, implement workshops and seminars, and conduct conference presentations throughout New York State.
We have a track record of success in over 60 school districts on Long Island and in the greater New York Metropolitan area. Our commitment to excellence and success is seen through the students we support and their ability to overcome challenges, have positive experiences at school, and find meaningful lifestyle outcomes in the community after graduation.

our mission
Our mission is to help students with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities, and behavioral challenges by providing comprehensive support services that will enable them to overcome obstacles and find solutions leading to fulfilling and productive experiences in school, at home, and in the community.
our philosophy
- We believe that all people, regardless of the nature or severity of their disability, have a right to access the community.
- We believe a careful examination of each person’s life plan will bring about quality of life changes that enhance physical well-being, emotional well-being, social well-being, and access to community activities.
- We recognize that adults and children with disabilities can encounter barriers and obstacles that adversely affect their overall quality of life; and that these barriers can be overcome in two ways: (1) by building skills and (2) by instigating changes in environments and support systems.
- We believe that intervention should occur in natural settings with natural supports.
- Finally, we believe that positive behavior support as a clinical practice should be derived from empirical research, and as such our team relies on evidence-based interventions in all our work.
how we differ
- Lifespan Perspective. Our highly skilled and diverse team of consultants have supported individuals ranging from early intervention through late adulthood.
- Advanced Degrees, Training and Experience. As a professional corporation, PBSC is dedicated recruiting, hiring, and retaining the most highly skilled professionals working in the field. Our team includes high level professionals including certified teachers, licensed behavior analysts and full licensed clinical psychologists.
- Quality Assurance. We have designated Team Leaders who engage in regular contact with their consultants, providing feedback and support that is essential to ensuring excellent service delivery.
- Community Connections and Affiliations. Through our years of experience we have built relationships with a number of organizations, including Long Island Developmental Disabilities Service Office, and we are active collaborators with the Consolidated Support Services in New York State. Several consultants also teach at local colleges and universities, including Hofstra, C.W. Post, Queens College, and Touro College.
- Community Outreach. We have established a not-for-profit, Positive Community Connections (PCC), which allows us to provide additional access to resources, support, and funding that may not otherwise be available for families.
“Never underestimate the ability of a small group of dedicated people to change the world.
Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
— Margaret Mead
DedicationSeveral PBS staff members were mentored by Dr. Edward Carr, including PBS Founders Dr. Magito McLaughlin and Dr. Anderson Ryan.
Dr. Carr’s career spanned over 3 decades and reflected his intellect, creativity, compassion, and true desire to use his gifts to make a difference in the lives of people with autism and other special needs. Beginning with his early work following strict behavioral principles and methods, Ted continuously sought new directions to ensure that research connected to real lives. As his career and interests evolved, there was a progression from basic Skinnerian behavior techniques to Applied Behavior Analysis with the late Ivar Lovaas to more the comprehensive practices of Positive Behavior Support. A pioneer in the field, Ted was a co-founder of the Association for Positive Behavior Support, which is a professional network/community that is committed to developing and implementing best practices in the field of behavioral support. We were among a fortunate few to have the honor of working closely with Ted. As a mentor, he challenged us to think independently, to use stringent methods in our research, and to approach every project with the intent of true applicability in the field. Ted was meticulous in everything he did, including his responsibilities as a mentor. He helped us navigate the waters of publication, presentations, and clinical application of evidence-based interventions. We emerged from his program with a wealth of information, ideas, and skills to move forward as researchers, academics, and as practitioners. Ted truly inspired us with his wit and humor, his open and honest feedback, his expectations for greatness from all of us, and his own enthusiasm for finding true solutions for real people. Our work is dedicated to the work and memory of our mentor and friend, Ted Carr, 1947-2009. |
