In this course students will learn about Jim Henson and the tremendous positive impact of his imagination, puppetry, design, film work, and leadership. For decades, children and adults have been entertained and learned many life lessons from his magical muppets. Topics include:
- his background, birthplace, artistic influences, early personal interests
- his early work in television/variety shows as well as a timeline of his career achievements
- the formation of his own company and his contribution to TV advertising
- samples of his work from The Muppet Show to the Dark Crystal, Emmet Otter & more
- how his work ethic, creativity and gentle leadership guided a team of puppeteers, designers, writers, composers, and film crews for decades
- his life philosophy as expressed through his work and its impact on the world.
- How his work promoted positive self-expression, self-acceptance and diversity
- The origins of the ancient art of puppetry/marionettes We will also meet (Q&A) a puppeteer, who was also a recent owner of a unique puppet theater on Long Island!
- learn of the Jim Henson exhibit currently running at the Museum of Moving Images in NYC.
Thomas Conklin is an educator who has been working in the field of education and human services for over 25 years. He has recently provided education and life skills instruction to individuals living in a residential school on Long Island. Tom loves to advocate for individuals trying to better their lives and truly enjoys promoting positive spirit amongst any group that he is a part of. Tom is very excited to teach an PBS ACE class on Jim Henson, a lifelong inspiration of his. It is with great hope that any student joining this particular class will learn about and enjoy the presentation on this particular legendary artist in Jim Henson!
