What exactly is rock and roll?
Where did it come from?
in this course we'll explore the history of the genre from its origins in the blues, country, and other musical traditions. We'll learn how rock and roll is not just one music but many, from doo-wop to glam rock; from country rock to progressive rock, folk rock to stadium rock and more. We'll learn about all of the greats - from Elvis to the Beatles to the rock stars of today.
We will see how rock and roll became not only the most important music of the 20th century, but also how it influences and is influenced by the larger culture.

Michael Savini was raised on Rock and Roll. Growing up the youngest in a large family, he had access to most of the great records of the classic rock era (sometimes they were on 8-track tape!). He has been an avid follower of the rock scene from a young age. A guitar player and drummer himself, his favorites include the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young. He's particularly fond of country rock, and believes that a rock and roll band should usually include a pedal steel guitar and a fiddle. Michael is well-known throughout Long Island and has been involved with supporting a diverse array of individuals in a number of different capacities. He is happy to be back as an instructor for this round of PBS Adult Education classes.
