In this course, we will explore some of the greatest "LPs'' of the rock era. As rock and roll became the dominant musical form in America, the long-playing album replaced single records as the most popular format. We'll look at (and of course listen to), the great records from the 1960s through today, from the days of Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper to Led Zeppelin IV and Dark Side of the Moon, to record-breaking albums of the 1970s like Rumours and Frampton Comes Alive. We will include later classics like Nevermind and Jagged Little Pill, all the way to the hit albums of recent years. We will see how our favorite artists turn collections of songs into cohesive works of art. We will appreciate the lost art of the Album Cover and we may even break out our old record players!
Michael Savini was raised on Rock and Roll. Growing up the youngest in a large family, he had access to most of the great records of the classic rock era (sometimes they were on 8-track tape!). He has been an avid follower of the rock scene from a young age. A guitar player and drummer himself, his favorites include the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young. He's particularly fond of country rock, and believes that a rock and roll band should usually include a pedal steel guitar and a fiddle. Michael is well-known throughout Long Island and has been involved with supporting a diverse array of individuals in a number of different capacities. He is happy to be back as an instructor for this round of PBS Adult Education classes.
