This course will take its students behind the scenes of the groundbreaking company Pixar, that pioneered a new generation of animation and forever changed the face of filmmaking. We will view the history of how this studio came to be, the minds behind the operation and how they combined their gifts in art, science and business to launch a new way to make 3-D animated films and have a historic impact on filmmaking forever. Ed Catmull, John Lasseter and Steve Jobs overcame years of creative struggle and financial loss to launch an entirely new animation industry. Starting with the first full length CG film Toy Story, Pixar has entertained millions of people worldwide, and established an unprecedented and as yet unparalleled record of box-office success. We will review and study the classics of Pixar such as Toy Story, Bug’s Life, Monster’s Inc, Cars, Up and much more. We will also view several Pixar shorts and discuss the ideas and thoughts behind them, read abbreviated literature based on particular stories, and also study and view the breathtaking behind-the-scenes visual process of colorscripts. Colorscripts are the sequential paintings that visually represent key story moments from each film and set the lighting, color, and tone during the filmmaking process. Since Toy Story's release in 1995, Pixar Animation Studios has set the standard for contemporary animation with a range of their classic and influential feature films and shorts that they have produced. Join us to infinity and beyond!
